DAZZLER AND SPARKLER

Daksha Nagarkar. It is not just her name which is unconventional, her performances too are- be it Mythili in Hora Hori or Geetha in Hushaaru. Rather preferring to call spade a spade, she’s far away from giving diplomatic answers. That honesty is what makes her refreshingly different from the current crop of leading ladies. In an exclusive tête-à-tête, Daksha talks of her struggles and choices.

Latest Buzz
Your role in Hushaaru was lauded. Your response?
As a 20 year-old, I had my fears about whether I could do justice to the character in my first film Hora... With Hushaaru, I came well-prepared and ready to try anything. I felt elated when the film became a hit.

Working with director Sree Harsha Konugati and actor Tejus
I could connect with Harsha from day one, I could, with great ease, discuss my character and for that matter, any other aspect. He is one gem of a person and trustworthy. I also enjoyed working with Tejus. He is now one of my closest friends.

Upcoming projects
There are quite a few offers in the pipeline. I am going through each one of them thoroughly.

REWIND
On bagging your first film
While undergoing a dance course with Shiamak Davar in Hyderabad, someone informed me about a beauty pageant and urged me take part. Since I was pursuing BBA (a correspondence course), I had a lot of free time and went for it. I bagged the title. My pictures were circulated among all the coordinators and PR circles in the city. One of them forwarded the same to director Teja and he approached me with Hora...

First reaction
Excited, since I had aspired to be an actress since childhood and my dream was bearing fruit finally. But I was skeptical whether I was prepared for the role or not. However, I decided to attend the meeting and that’s it. No audition per se.

Family blessings
My parents Dinesh & Sadhana, never really had an issue. They have always been supportive. Since I am the only child, they didn’t have any choice.

Toehold
I am yet to find that sound space in the industry. I recall after Hora..., I took a break for two years as my parents insisted that I should complete my studies. So, I am yet to make my mark.

Initial hurdles
I never got the chance to hobnob with the industry folks as Hora... was not shot in Hyderabad. But after the promotions, I did get a lot of offers. Unfortunately, the movie flopped and I was left with only a few offers in my hand. I could sense a change in everyone’s attitude. They expected it to be a big hit and no other movie had released that week. That was when I learnt that nothing is constant. The struggle was more mental than physical.

FORTE
Acting workshop or dialect training?
It was an on-the-job training on the set of my first film with Teja. It was the best way to learn. I did take a dialect training because I wanted to dub for my role. Acting is 50% of what you do in front of the camera & 50% at the dubbing studio.

Inspiration
Shah Rukh Khan. His journey of ups and downs, rise to the top, and the transition from playing a negative character to a die-hard romantic hero is motivating. I want to mention that Chiranjeevi’s journey is also equally inspiring.

Films you look forward to Though I want to explore each and every genre, I am a die-hard fan of commercial films.

Strength and weakness
Strength: I am raw so one can easily mould me into any role.
I am ever-ready to experiment and not rigid and grasp things fast. Weakness: There is that initial hesitation when it comes to delivering Telugu dialogues as it is not my mother tongue. But I will be comfortable with it when I do more movies. I am emotionally very vulnerable.

Surrender completely to director or give own inputs
I am a director’s actor. It is a learning phase for me, so I feel it is important to surrender and learn as much as possible from the captain of the ship.

UP AND CLOSE
Sacrifices behind glamour
We actors are expected to portray this happy side of ours on social media despite having a rough day. We have to say goodbye to the real emotions.

The real Daksha is
Couch potato, loves to watch movies, an introvert, not a party person & moody.

Critics
I have been very lucky with critics as they have written only positive points.
