THE VARIED HUES

"All artists have...the desire to please; and art is...defined as an attempt to create pleasing forms," rightly said a British art critic Herbert Read. So we can define art as, an emotional activity of creating or appreciating beauty! The stroke of brush, the dash and splash of hues, the ephemeral moment captured for eternity on canvas - this is the world of painting. While it’s an art for the onlookers and critics, for its practitioners it’s a way of life or more aptly a sphere of trance. Let’s peep into the world of three such creative geniuses of Vizag.

Jumana Topiwala
Jumana’s main compositional subjects are palms, palm fronds and flowers. Her creations are inspired by the play of light and shadows as she transforms them from the three dimensional world of light into the two dimensional space of paper and canvas. They also project her observations and her subjects’ reactions to colours. She was initiated into the world of painting at the age of 12. Water colours are her favourite medium. She has been teaching art for over three decades and declares that Vizag has amazing talents but needs a right patronage!

PALMS OVER THE WATER
It is an image that Jumana witnessed during her visit to Andamans that got transformed into this painting. The lush green palms swaying in the sea breeze and bending to touch the crashing waves is reflected in this four-piece painting!

Base: Oil on canvas
Size: 16" x 20”
Price: Rs. 60,000

PURPLE RADIANCE
Vibrant colours are captured tastefully in this bright painting of Fuschia flower. Lavender, Violet, Orange and Yellow are blended together in different intensities and powerful strokes creating a captivating piece. The beauty of this piece is that it can be hung whichever way you want.

Base: Water colour
Size: 20"x 20"
Price: Rs. 22,000

UNFURLINGS
A splendid abstract painting of Calla Lillies in subtle shades! Deviating from
the run-of the mill, she focuses on the core of the flowers, leaving the often-detailed petals out. The ‘light and colour play’ creates alluring images. These pieces can be arranged as set of two
and even four!

Base: Water color
Size: 11" x 15" (each)
Price: Rs. 15, 000 (each)

Jaya Narasimha Rao
The Pen and Ink paintings of mythological characters drawn by her mother were the first artistic impressions she carries on her mind even now. What began as a hobby has turned into a passion for Jaya. Now it has assumed a spiritual aura. However, she gives credit to Jumana Topiwala for showing her the joy of colour. Water colours are her forte but she enjoys the spontaneity and vibrancy of oils and acrylics too. Painting Buddha in myriad forms has become a form of meditation for her.

TO THE LIGHT
The warm yellow hues at the break of dawn are the inspiration for the composition of the painting. The branches of the banyan tree gently cradle the sun-kissed face of The Buddha.

Material: Oils and acrylics
Size: 3 ft. x 4 ft.
Price: Rs. 40,000

OM
At the end of OM there is silence. It is a silence of joy. It is the end of the journey where there is no fear and sorrow. The Monk meditating near the feet of Buddha depicts this.

Material: Water colours
Size: 21" x 14"
Price: Rs. 18,000

SYNERGY
This composition depicts the five energies in the universe viz; Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Space. At the background is the perforated stupa of Borobudur with The Buddha in a sitting posture.

Material: Acrylics
Size: 2 ft. x 2 ft. / 2 ft. x 1 ft. (2 panels)
Price: Rs. 20,000

Jyoti Rohilla
Little did Jyoti know that what began as a holiday activity in her teens would turn into a life-long passion. The very first time it was a piece of charcoal that gave shape to her expression. Later, these ‘black-n-white’ expeditions turned into multi-coloured creations. Anything and everything that inspires her is translated into a splash of colours on canvas. She has established her own individualistic expression. She believes in simplicity and tries to reflect it in her creative work.
